Frozen Bubbles

On a cold winter’s day, we may not want to go outside and play as much as we do during the summer, but this kids nature activity may get you out to enjoy the snowy weather! Think back to summertime for a moment. Did you blow any bubbles? Blowing bubbles doesn’t just have to be a summer activity! In fact, we think it’s even more fun to blow bubbles in the wintertime because they freeze! Try it out for yourself.

What You’ll Need

  • Bubble solution (you can buy some, or make your own!)

  • Bubble blowing stick/wand

  • A cold winter day!

What to Do

  1. If you are making your own bubble solution, add 1 cup of dish soap for every 4 to 5 cups of water. Adding a spoonful of corn syrup or glycerin will also help make larger, longer-lasting bubbles.

  2. Take your bubble mixture and bubble wand and head outside!

  3. Blow some bubbles! Watch them as they drift away and fall to the ground. What do you notice? Are they forming crystals?

  4. Repeat until you run out of bubble solution!

  5. Try chasing after your bubbles too! It may be harder to do in the deep snow.

Ask Yourself

  • What temperature does water freeze at? Was it cold enough for your bubbles to freeze?

  • Can you pop the bubble once it is frozen? Why or why not?

  • What animals did you spot while you were out blowing bubbles? Where are all of the rest of the animals?
