Volunteers are at the heart of what we do! By helping us steward our conservation lands, build community support, and educate the public about environmental stewardship, EALT's volunteers have a real and tangible impact in conservation. Read below to see the many ways you can get involved.
Stewarding our conservation lands is crucial to make sure that they are protected, healthy, and accessible for both people and wildlife. This is made possible by our dedicated volunteer team, who work to help care for these lands throughout the year. Most stewardship work takes place during the summer months, but may occur at any time of year. If you are interested in joining EALT-led stewardship events, sign up for our volunteer newsletter to learn about upcoming opportunities every month, or look at our events page to see what activities are available now. Stewardship activities include:
Invasive Plant Removal
Black Knot Removal
Barbed Wire Removal or Fence Repair
Bat Box Installation & Monitoring
Nest Box Cleaning & Monitoring
Sign Installation
Trail Maintenance
Work Bees - Assembling Bee Hotels, Bat Boxes, or Nest Boxes.
Videos and information about many of these activities can be found here.
The Conservation Land Stewards program launched in 2021. This program is intended for volunteers who are ready to take on more responsibility and visit the land independently. Stewards commit to regularly visiting one of EALT’s conservation lands with a partner to conduct stewardship and monitoring work. By visiting during this two-year commitment, stewards gain a connection to the land and see how it has changed and benefited over time from their stewardship work. Duties will vary based on conservation priorities for each land. Recruitment for the upcoming year’s team occurs between January to March, with training in April/May! Find more details about the program here.
For those interested in more technical field work, we have several citizen science opportunities, including amphibian monitoring, bat box monitoring, bird banding, butterfly surveying, and loon surveying. These volunteer opportunities have a greater commitment required than our typical volunteer stewardship events and are self-led. Citizen science volunteers conduct surveys and collect data throughout the summer months. Application deadlines vary based on program. Find more details about the program here.
Our outreach and communications activities aim to build broad-based community understanding of, and support for, land conservation and stewardship. EALT’s Conservation Outreach Volunteer program lets you contribute to our electronic resources via our blog or social media accounts, and represent EALT at information booths and workshops. It also allows you contribute woodworking skills, both to maintain our shop stock and create materials for our workshops. Opportunities will be published in our volunteer newsletter and on our events page. For more information on what volunteering at an information booth looks like, click here.
Not all volunteer opportunities are listed in our newsletter. EALT frequently partners with groups that are looking for a team bonding event or corporate volunteer day. Some of our previous corporate volunteer events have included building bat boxes, removing invasive plants, planting trees and shrubs, removing barbed wire fences, and more. Opportunities and availability are dependent on our conservation priorities at the time. To request a group volunteer event, please fill out our Group Volunteering Request Form.
