Smith-Blackburn Homestead is a property located east of Elk Island National Park, and is home to a vast array of wildlife, feathered, furred, and finned. We need some helping hands in order to help maintain some of our conservation projects on the land, all to do with trees!
Throughout the land and especially near the lake, old mature trees provide important habitat for birds, small mammals, and other wildlife. However, a healthy beaver population in the area means that many of them are being felled. We will be wrapping the bases of some of the bigger and older trees with wire to protect them from the busy beavers.
There are also portions of unused barbed wire fencing on the land that must be removed, for the benefit of wildlife and human visitors. Old barbed wire poses an injury risk to wildlife trying to pass over or under it, and can pose a hazard to humans who try to do the same.
We will meet at the Smith Blackburn Homestead at 10:00 AM and leave the site by 3:00 PM.
